  3. Additional information as of March 15, 1992.

  5. Please Note: If you don't understand what I'm talking about in
  6. this file, read FONTINFO first and *then* this one and it will
  7. make more sense.

  10. - Adobe's Install program works best when the font files have
  11. underscores in them. If you get a directory of any Adobe font
  12. disk, you'll see that every font is broken down into no more than
  13. four letters and four spaces. 
  14.  
  15. For example, Tekton becomes:
  16.  
  17. TK______.*
  18.  
  19. and Tekton Bold becomes:
  20.  
  21. TKB_____.*
  22.  
  23. and Tekton Bold Oblique becomes:
  24.  
  25. TKBO____.*
  26.  
  27. If the font you want to install has no underscores, it would be
  28. in your best interest to rename them and make the appropriate
  29. changes in the .INF file and INSTALL.CFG file.

  32. - Remove all comment lines in the .AFM file. Some people try to
  33. include characters like the copyright symbol in the comment line
  34. and it translates as a right angle of sorts, and Install hates
  35. it. I'm not kidding you, one non-letter or number in the .AFM
  36. file and it really freaks out by giving you the cryptic ERROR
  37. PARSING FONT_________________.AFM.
  38.  
  39. - If you get the error:
  40.  
  41.           More Metrics thab StartCharMetrics
  42.  
  43.  
  44. It means that there are more lines of code in the .AFM file than
  45. the .AFM file has recorded. Go to the line that has:
  46.  
  47. StartCharMetrics SomeNumberThatIsObviouslyWrong
  48.  
  49. And below it is a list of lines that begins with the letter "C"
  50. and then a number, and then some information. DO NOT rely on that
  51. number to give you an accurate count of how many metrics there
  52. are because they refer only to the ASCII character number
  53. represented. You're gonna have to count 'em out. (which unless
  54. you have a shortcut can be a real drag)

  57. Fonts generated by Fontographer on the Macintosh seem to have a
  58. tendency (although not all the time) to miscount by one. (and one
  59. is usually how much it is off by). If you have pages and pages of
  60. numbers and don't want to count them all out, try just increasing
  61. the figure in StartCharMetrics by one and re-running Install.
  62. Usually that does it.

  64. - .AFM files that for some reason come double spaced do not seem
  65. to have any problem installing. You may have problems with some
  66. other part of it, but the fact that it is double spaced does not
  67. seem to cause any undue hardships.
  68.  
  69. - Install really *hates* fonts that do not come with .AFM files.
  70. If you're trying to install your fonts into ATM, don't bother
  71. with any of this, just let ATM do all the work for you.

  73. - The line that says EncodingScheme is either AppleStandard or
  74. AdobeStandardEncoding. In what I think is an awfully funny
  75. statement on Adobe's Install program, Install doesn't like fonts
  76. that have "AdobeStandardEncoding" as its EncodingScheme. Play it
  77. safe and go with AppleStandard. This trick has made fonts work
  78. when before I got the "Error Parsing WhateverFont." message. Go
  79. figure.

  81. - Do not skimp on AppleFondID. I know its a stupid four digit
  82. number that doesn't seem to have anything to do with anything,
  83. but if there are two fonts on the same disk that have the same
  84. AppleFondID, it'll return an error. No joke.
  85.  
  86. -  Some fonts simply will not, for no particular reason, install,
  87. proving once in for all that computers are not an exact science.
  88. I still get that rotten "Error Parsing
  89. WhateverFont___________.AFM" and I can't figure out why. Maybe
  90. it's me. Some font seem to only install on alternate Tuesdays
  91. only when the moon is waxing....

  94. Disclaimer: I didn't do it, I swear! I wasn't even there! I don't
  95. even own a Tiffany Lamp! The check's in the mail!

  98. life of me who. So let's say Copyright (C) 1992 Adobe Systems
  99. Inc. so I don't run the risk of an infringement suit. Anything
  100. else that belongs to anybody is Copyright (C) 1992 them too.
